On behalf of the Board of ACWW and the Canada Area Conference Organisation Committee we would like to invite all members and friends to attend the Canada Area Conference to be held May 13th to 15th 2025, in beautiful Victoria BC at the Langford Legion on 761 Station Avenue, Victoria BC.
The Canada Area Conference Theme is “Sustainable Growth for the Future, Focusing on the Environment.” Please join us for inspirational speakers, engaging conversation, knowledge sharing, and workshops. This will also be a wonderful opportunity to renew old friendships and create new ones.

Magdie de Kock lives in South Africa where she was born and raised by her devoted parents on a rural farm and enjoyed a carefree childhood. She is happily married to Johan, and they have recently celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Their three married children and their spouses, including four adorable grandchildren, bring joy and happiness to Magdie and her husband! She loves spending time with her family, taking long leisurely walks with her husband on their Free State farm. Magdie loves reading, writing and cooking and her idea of happiness is sitting down with her family at the dining room table for Sunday lunch!
She is a qualified Pre-Primary School Principal and has a lively interest in education and early childhood development. She is a Life Coach and received training in International Meeting Procedures and Meeting etiquette. She serves on the Boards of Trustees of various South African cultural organisations. She is passionate about her interest and involvement in voluntary work and serves her local community with dedication.
Elected to the Board of Trustees of ACWW first in 2013 as the Chairman of the Communications & Marketing Committee, Magdie was elected World President of ACWW in 2019. In 2023 she was re-elected, unapposed, to serve in this position until 2026. She rose from a rural background in a developing country to global stages where she represents millions of members of ACWW with sincerity, confidence and enthusiasm.
Magdie agrees with the words of Maya Angelou who said: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”, and she strives to apply this wisdom to her life.
As a Sinkut WI Director I became the Safe-Home Liaison, represented our WI on the Safe Home’s Board of Directors for 3 years, and initiated Start-Up-Kits that developed into a BCWI Provincial Project. We are currently working on our 10th Start-Up-Kit. We aim to do at least one Start-Up-Kit per year. Fundraising and donations support this cause. Currently I am the SWI President as Shelly Simrose stepped down to focus on her position as our BCWI President. With the SWI support I continue to be the Safe-Home Liaison.
With the BCWI I created the newsletter column, “Our Well of Wellness…”; writing health and wellness related articles on Food Waste Management, Deprescribing, Mental Health, etc. More recently, with the support of the BCWI Board & Membership, I developed the BCWI Forensic Nursing Bursary and oversee this Project. Fundraising and donations support this cause. I gathered 3 guest speakers for the BCWI Triennial held in Kamloops in June of 2023. Currently I am the BCWI VP.
Last year the FWIC Board invited me to their Resolution Committee and Communications Committee. I’ve become a FWIC Communication Liaison. I took the Leadership Training Modules and enjoy attending FWIC Webinars. I’ve introduced a Sexual Violence Against Women Resolution to the FWIC/WI Canada Board. Moving forward, my hope is that our Provincial Forensic Nursing Bursary gets Canada-wide support.
Creating projects that have a broad reach and a positive impact is fulfilling and I am grateful to the BCWI Board and Membership and the FWIC Board for supporting the volunteer work that I’m involved in.
Bob McDonald has been the host of CBC Radio's 'Quirks and Quarks' since 1992. He is a regular science commentator on CBC's News Network and a science correspondent for CVC TV's 'The National'. His book 'Measuring the Earth with a Stick' was shortlisted for the Science Writers and Communicators of Canada Book Award. He has been honoured with the 2001 Michael Smith Award for Science Promotion from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada; the 2002 Sandford Fleming Medal from the Royal Canadian Institute; and the 2005 McNeil Medal for the Public Awareness of Science from the Royal Society of Canada. He holds twelve honourary doctorates from Canadian universities. In November 2011, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and in 2015, asteroid 332324 was officially named 'Bobmcdonald' in his honour.
Ruth Fenner was born and raised on the prairies, and as a young wife and mother, moved with her husband and sons to a farm at Dawson Creek, BC in 1965. They retired to Vancouver Island in 1990.
The Women's Institutes were very active in the Peace River area, and Ruth joined West Saskatoon Women's Institute's ranks in August 1965. Since then she has served in all offices at local, District and Provincial levels. Some of the special roles she has filled include representing the Institute on the British Columbia Federation of Agriculture Energy Committee; coordinating a three hour stage production to depict Canada to an Associated Country Women of the World Conference audience and planning an Interfaith Church service for a National WI Conference.
Ruth has worked in radio and television, both on-air and as a writer; wrote a biography for a friend, as well as preparing four lines of family genealogy. Her most challenging writing venture was the 100 year history of the British Columbia Women's Institute.
For five years Ruth dedicated most of her time to securing a suitable acknowledgment of the achievements of Margaret “Madge” Watt. This project was completed in September of 2016 when a Canadian Government plaque was placed on the grounds of the Metchosin Municipal offices acknowledging Mrs. Watt as “ A Person of National Historical Significance.”
Veronica Carroll is the CEO of the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island. In her
most recent leadership positions in healthcare philanthropy, Veronica has successfully raised
campaign funds for new builds and improvements to acute healthcare facilites across three
health authorities in British Columbia.
Over the past eight years in her current role, Veronica has championed a total deployment of
$60 million supporting community and public healthcare services and programs across
Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. In addition, during the onset of covid restrictions,
Veronica and her team launched a capital campaign to build and operate Q̓ʷalayu House, a
Home Away From Home in Campbell River, BC, which opened to its first family in August 2021.
Veronica and her team are currently raising $10 million for a 2025 build of the Foundation’s
third Home Away From Home on Vancouver Island. This third home will be the Foundation’s
largest, with 16 rooms for families with children accessing healthcare in Nanaimo, BC.
With an MBA in Management Consulting and over two decades as a Certified Fundraising
Executive, Veronica has a proven track record of philanthropic leadership. She has 30+ years
raising funds for pan-Canadian, provincial, regional and community health-related charities,
environmental causes, and social service agencies, and is well respected among her peers in the
philanthropic community.
My name is Kim Coy and I have been a Colwood Women’s Institute member for 7 years now. I am currently our Colwood Branch President. I am currently the Director of Resolutions on the BCWI Provincial Board. I have also sat in on the FWIC resolutions committee this past year.
I have a keen interest in moving our resolutions forward and making life better for all Canadians and our local communities big and small. I am a mother of two teenage boys, I own and operate an Early Learning Childcare Centre that has been in operation for the past 25 years, and I am a certified local youth baseball coach.
Cammy is a passionate advocate for agriculture and a dedicated protector of her children’s future. Having lived in the Cowichan Valley since the age of two, she and her family have been deeply involved in the community for decades. In 2011, Cammy and her husband started Lockwood Farms, a thriving operation that supplies fresh eggs to over 8,000 people and provides organically grown vegetables to over 400 families. Under her leadership, the farm has grown from 3 laying hens to over 6,000, ensuring a market for every egg. Her expertise in the Canadian egg industry has been recognized, with Cammy serving as a witness in several parliamentary committees. She has gained valuable insights into the systems that allow 150 family-run farms to supply all of BC’s eggs.
Cammy is also a strong voice for her community, serving on several boards for community organizations. She has helped resettle refugees, organized events, fundraised, donated, and mentored other community leaders. In 2019, Cammy and her husband James were awarded BC’s Outstanding Young Farmers, a testament to their dedication and hard work. She takes pride in her products, standing behind them every week at the Duncan Farmer’s Market.
Cammy entered politics when the devastating effects of climate change threatened both her farm and her children’s future. Disappointed in the government’s response to climate catastrophes, she is determined to put people, not corporations, at the center of BC politics. Cammy’s commitment to her community and her firsthand experience in agriculture make her a powerful advocate for a sustainable and prosperous future.
